Presented at PANEL F: CORPUS-BASED EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH IN ASIA, in the 2nd International Education Conference (Redesigning Pedagogy: Culture, Knowledge and Understanding), 28-30 May 2007, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Abstract:

This presentation describes a corpus-based analysis of multimedia teaching and multimodal teaching. Multimedia teaching refers to the practice of using multimedia materials (verbal texts, graphics, photos, sounds, video clipping, etc.) for instructional purposes. Multimodal teaching, on the other hand, refers to the practice of constructing multimedia materials for the learner’s five or more sense channels to interact with. Given an instructional goal, it is theoretically possible to find the best combination of multimedia materials with the most appropriate multimodal channels of interaction. The theme of this paper is to explore a range of combinations based on both theories of learning and evidence drawn from the multimodal corpus consisting of face to face classroom instruction as well as learners’ interactions with the Web-based multimedia resources, compiled by the author over the last five years. Demonstrations will be made to show how the agent-based modeling language (AML), designed by the author, can be used as an easy-to-learn practical tool for the content modelling of the multimodal corpus of instruction.
