History
In its early days its chief objective was to provide Mainland Chinese scholars with a window to the scholarship outside China. As China’s open door policy increasingly strengthened, and exchanges with the outside world became regular and extensive, the Conference adapted itself accordingly, and has become one of the major events in the Asia-Pacific region. Its chief objective is now to provide a forum for scholars all over the world to share their latest research findings on any branches of linguistics.

The Institute of Linguistics, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences is the originator as well as a regular co-organizer of the conference. Its Journal of Contemporary Linguistics (evolved from the former Journal of Linguistics Abroad) provides a major outlet for the conference papers.
