The OTA has over twenty years of experience of collecting, preserving, and redistributing electronic texts to the worldwide academic community. This experience qualifys us to meet the challenges and requirements of a new and more demanding generation of academics.
The benefits of using the OTA are two fold:
The users of our texts benefit from gaining access to one of the largest electronic archive in existence today. The OTA is at the forefront of research into providing high quality, well documented texts for the academic community. Users can choose from wide range of texts in a number of languages and expect them to be delivered promptly and free of charge.
Data creators and depositors benefit from using the archival and distibution management service employed by the OTA. Electronic data is particulary vulnerable to loss, damage and obsolescence; the OTA can provide a safe repository for such material and ensure that it remains properly maintained, thereby guaranteeing its long-term preservation and ability to be re-used by others. Other benefits to creators and depositors include professional advice on the best methods for digitising and documenting electronic resources.

How do I get a text (texts) from the OTA and what do I do if the OTA hasn't got it?
As a Service Provider for the AHDS the OTA will be part of an integrated network of digital resources, access to which will be through a user registration scheme maintained by ATHENS. The details of this scheme have yet to be implemented and details will be forthcoming as soon as they are available.
The OTA is currently working on methods of freely delivering its reources via the Web. However, this process may take some time, in the meantime there are a number of possible ways to access texts directly from the OTA:
Public domain texts will be freely available from our on-line catalogue and may be downloaded in a number of different formats.
Some texts require the user to obtain the written permission of the original depositor before the OTA can issue the text. Contact details for depositors can be obtained by contacting the OTA directly info@ota.ahds.ac.uk.
Where required the OTA can provide texts on physical media such as diskettes, data cartridge, and CD-ROM.
If the OTA does not have the text you are looking for it is possible that another site may hold the text. Starting points for locating texts on the Web include collections of resources such as HUMBUL a gateway to International Humanities Resources or a web search engine such as Alta Vista may be sufficient.
