Following on the First Internationl Conference on Education (May 30 - June 1, 2005), which had a total of 2000 pariticipants from all over the world, the Second International Conference on Education is scheduled on May 28-30, 2007. "Redesigning Pedagogy: Culture, knowledge and understanding" is the theme of this conference. Here is the link to the conference website and the call for paper: http://conference.nie.edu.sg/2007/call.php

We have proposed 6 panels/forums in the conference, to highlight the emergence of Corpus Linguistics in the region, one of the panel proposed to invite researchers working on "Perspectives of Corpus-Based Educational Research in Asia". Here is the detailed info:

Panel E: Perspectives on Corpus-Based Educational Research in Asia

The study of educational discourse can have a profound influence on how teachers plan, implement, and evaluate their classroom activities. Despite its importance, however, classroom discourse analysis has received relatively little attention in parts of Asia. This Panel will thus explore the potential roles that corpus-based analyses will play in informed educational practices. It will examine educational discourse with respect to its potential value and effectiveness to student learning and broader educational objectives. In addition, a major advantage of corpus-based research is its strength in integrating both qualitative and quantitative approaches to not just classroom discourse research, but also textbook evaluation and analyses, syllabus design, developing effective teaching materials, and analyzing student work in a highly systematic manner. Specific illustrative questions for this Panel include:

  • How do teachers and students participate in and structure their talk in the conduct of their daily teaching and learning?
  • What kinds and levels of knowledge do teachers and students emphasise as relevant to the classroom task?
  • What specific linguistic and organisational features exist, and which of them are likely to lead to academic achievements?
  • How are teachers’ professional identity and students’ learning identity constructed in and around the classrooms?
  • How can teachers enhance their pedagogic practices through professional development activities centered around their own and /or others’ classroom discourse?
