R是个编程语言，也是个编程工具，是2011年11月名列第27位流行度的编程语言
在计算机界，编程语言往往是一套规范，并不意味着一定是某个名称的软件，编程语言往往也有若干的“变体”，尤其是依附于各种具体的编程环境（IDE，Integrated Development Environment）的变体；但是，编程工具就是具体的一个或多个编程语言的具体开发平台了。R是个编程语言，也算有点冷僻的编程语言了，在2011年11月的TIOBE（编程语言流行度排行榜）上，它名列第27位，第一名是Java，第二名是C，第三名是C++，第四名是C＃，第五名是PHP，第六名是Objective C，第七名是Visual Basic，第八名是Python，第九名是Javascript，第十名是Perl。汇编语言（Assembly）都还名列第24名呢，所以，R的流行度比汇编语言这种枯燥的语言还要生僻一些呢。不过，R可以在Windows和多种其他操作系统上运行。
