Copyright issues in building corpora for unpublished thesis

Greetings! For my thesis project (which is not meant for publishing as yet) I'm building a corpus of MA dissertations and a corpus of published research articles, with texts downloaded from databases at my university's library. I'd like to know if I need to obtain permission to use the texts from copyright owners. If yes, who are the owners? My university's library or owners of the individual databases? I would be very grateful for your help.

My understanding is that if you're collecting such data for research purposes (as opposed to releasing corpus for commercial use), you're probably fine.
