Release 1.17 of Xaira is now available from the Sourceforge repository
at http://xaira.sf.net (the download page is
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=130289)
This is a major release which includes a change in the low level
interface between the client and the server, as well as several bug
fixes. For a full list of changes, see the ChangeLog. Major enhancements
in this release include the following:
(i) By default, the new (xaira) protocol is now used for all
client/server interaction in the Windows client. This should be mostly
transparent to users (but see below); in case of any problems the old
protocol is still available by means of a modification to the xcorpus
file.
(ii) Multi-part lemmata may now be defined, using any combination of
additional keys: for details see the Index Tools helpfile.
(iii) The default Unicode (soft) keyboard in the Windows client now
always matches the currently active input keyboard mapping.
(iv) Facilities for searching by XML attribute values in the Windows
client have been enhanced.
A new index format (25) has been introduced: all existing corpora need
to be reindexed.
NEW QUERY LANGUAGE
Work on redefining the XML query language used by Xaira continues. A
draft specification for the new language, tentatively renamed XXQ (for
Xaira XML Query), is available for discussion at
http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/rts/xaira/Doc/cql-spec.html; once details are
finalised, this will replace the current CQL.
KNOWN ISSUES IN THIS RELEASE
1. A CQL syntax error is reported for any scoped query involving a
numeric scope. Circumvention is to use the old (sara) protocol. Note
that scoped queries where the scope is defined by an XML element work
correctly.
2. "Dead" keys (e.g. accents) are not supported on the Unicode
keyboard.
