Widdowson and Sinclair/Stubbs/Beaugrande characterize well the so-called strong and weak cases for the use of corpus data. Between these two poles are many milder (positive or negative) reactions to corpus data.

Mike Nelson's (2000) thesis (section 5.3.3) provides an overview of these reactions.
