[求助]Corpus Annotation and Tagging Tools

是否可以认为Corpus Annotation分三个层次：Textual Markup、Wordclass Tagging、Syntactic Parsing ？

另外，据说Brown Corpus是免费的，不知如何取得？谢谢
 
I've done my homework and found answer in Dr. Xiao's article (2005) Corpus Annotation about the first question.
 
通常说的 Corpus Annotation 指的是以下（但不限于）几个层次的标注：

Grammatical tagging: part-of-speech tagging
Syntactic annotation: syntactic parsing
Semantic annotation
Discourse annotation: ( e.g. anaphoric relations in corpora)

当然因研究的目的不同，还有其它层次的标注，如：
Prosodic Annotation
Pragmatic Annotation
Stylistic Annotation
etc.

虽然所谓的其它层次的标注不是 mainstream 的 Annotations， 但各有其研究价值。欲了解更多关于语料标注方面的知识，下面这本书可作参考：

Laohong, do you use Unix or Windows?
I just found that CLAWS is for UNIX, and Brill's for Linux. The extension tar.Z is weird to me.

Have you tried GATE? Any help in POS tagging using GATE (based on Brill's)?
 
I'm using Windows and Linux. We have a site licence of CLWAS here for my projects. For your case, if you don't have much data to tag, actually you can make use of CLAWS tagger's www trial version free at: http://www.comp.lancs.ac.uk/ucrel/claws/trial.html
 
you can download Brill Tagger from Eric Brill's personal homepage at: http://www.cs.jhu.edu/~brill/

The downloaded file is Tar.Z format, and it can be easily unzipped with WinZip or WinRAR.

If you want to have a Windows version of Brill Tagger, here is the link (it may not be displayed well in our page here, to open the webpage, you should copy the whole line below to paste it into your internet browser's URL address):

The menu of the tool is in Franch by default, pls note the instruction of the page on how you can change the language settings.
 
As for GATE, I used it several years ago, and didn't use it any more, simply because it couldnot help me with my research goal at that time. If you only want to use it to do POS tag, I suggest you not to waste your time on it. There are other easy-to-use taggers available for you to try out. But if you do want to have a try, here is the link to download the latest GATE (3.1 windows version):
