Using corpora in Translation Studies: The state of the art
Richard Xiao and Ming Yue
Abstract
Translation Studies (TS) is an area of research that has benefited greatly from and been advanced by the corpus methodology over the past decade. This chapter first clarifies some terminological confusion in using corpora in translation and contrastive studies, which is followed by a review of the state of the art of corpus-based Translation Studies. On the basis of this review we present a case study from a genetically distinct language pair, namely English-Chinese translation, that has been undertaken in order to bring fresh evidence into the research of the so-called translation universals, which has so far been confined largely to English and closely related European languages.
