In this paper I wish to examine the two related concepts of semantic prosody and semantic preference. I will begin the section on each with a definition, attempt a review of relevant current positions and then describe a number of corpus-based experiments I conducted to throw light on the two phenomena. Finally, I will try to draw some conclusions about the relationship between them.

Dr. Xiao, thanks a lot for your generously reference sharing! I have been interested in such topic as semantic prosody ever since I had a general idea of the related research about it. I am doutful that, for example, whether the word cause has negative semantic prosody in all kinds of corpus and discussed it with my tutor yesterday. She mentioned the term semantic preference and suggested me make a further study about this point. Then I came across this paper, which is of great help to me. Thanks again!

your suspition is correct. the word cause does has a negative connotation, as evidenced already by other corpus players.
