对qualifier /modifier的释义的困惑

对qulifier 与modifier释义的困惑
qualifier 的解释

2.In grammar, a qualifier is a word or group of words that comes after a noun and gives more information about the person or thing that the noun refers to.《科林斯高级英语学习词典第5版》

2. Grammar A word or phrase that qualifies, limits, or modifies the meaning of another word or phrase.
【语法】 修饰语:修饰或限制另一个词或短语意思的词或短语《美国传统词典》

2 LINGUISTICS a MODIFIER 《麦克米兰英语词典》

.我查看了许多词典对此词的解释,都把它仅解释成“修饰语”没有涉及到该词是对名词后修饰语的称呼。
Collins对modifier与qualifier 的明确解释是 ..anything which you put in front of a noun is called a modifier.Anything which you put after a noun is called a qualifier 《collins cobuild english grammar 》
modifier
noun
(grammar) a word, such as an adjective or adverb, that describes another word or group of words, or restricts its/their meaning in some way: In 'speak quietly', the adverb 'quietly' is a modifier.《牛津高阶英语词典》
Grammatical modifier
The word modifier applies to either the adjective or the adverb in a sentence. An adjective is not actually required but helps modify and limit the extent of the meaning of a noun or pronoun, while an adverb helps modify a verb in a similar way. Thus modifiers, though not actually necessary, help define the meaning and are attributes of nouns, pronouns or verbs. A modifier is also called a qualifier.《wikipedia English-Free Encyclopedia》

疑问:到底是COLLINS 词典对该词的精确解释,而其他词典是模糊解释,还是COLLINS 本身对这个词的解释有误区?

谢谢

回复: 对qualifier /modifier的释义的困惑

Modifiers and qualifiers are two posh terms in functional grammar which correspond to pre-modifiers and post-modifiers in plain English.

A lot depends upon corpora, but not all.

诚如您所说,那COLLINS 对这两次的释义为什么仅仅只对名词的限定,修饰呢,而没有提到动词。是不是有对此词的解释过于窄化?

回复: 对qualifier /modifier的释义的困惑

You would not say that if you are familiar with SFG, where the two terms are primarily for use in analysis of noun groups (but also for adjective and adverb groups); verb groups are analysed in a different way. The Collins dictionary is following SFG terms here...(the Halliday - Sinclair stuff).
