This sentence: Athlets in high-impact sports such as running may also lose iron through a phenomenon where samll blood vessels in he feet leak blood.(from 新视野大学英语3, unit 2, section A, 第32句).
Here phenomenon is followed by 'where' instead of 'which' or 'that'. I can understand why according to intuition, but hope find more examples

The main difference is that the head noun "phenomenon" in "phenomenon + which " functions as the subject of the predicate in the relative clause, whereas the same cannot be said of the "phenomenon where" structure. That is, in the "phenomenon where" structure the head noun "phenomenon" merely introduces something to be elaborated on, and the subject of the relative clause can be something entirely different. The head noun in this case is a kind of nominal that is sometimes called 'signaling noun' (a la John Flowerdew, etc.).
