Editor’s note

The idea for this issue of the International Journal of Corpus Linguistics — six
papers on aspects of work by John Sinclair — came from a series of English
Language Research seminars in the Department of English, University of Birmingham,
in autumn 2004. Each seminar had taken a different text, discussed
its ideas, and then tried to set it in context, both generally in relation to later
developments within linguistics, and more narrowly for ongoing work at Birmingham,
and the continuation of a Sinclairian approach, five years after John’s
actual retirement. It would not have been possible to deal with all John’s work
in a single semester, nor indeed in a single issue of a journal: the area of spoken
discourse is a particular omission here. But the papers included represent
a little of the range, while demonstrating John’s concern with data and text,
words and grammar, and, working through those, meaning.
It is always difficult to arrange papers within a collection, and perhaps it
would have been easiest to do so arbitrarily, in alphabetical order of writers or
titles, or the order in which John’s papers appeared, or even the sequencing of
seminars within the original series. Instead, I have tried to reflect some sense of
a movement from word through grammar to text — though inevitably there is
interaction between levels, and few of John’s papers relate to only one thing.
As far as possible, the versions of John’s papers discussed here are those
appearing in one of the collections Corpus, Concordance, Collocation (1991,
Oxford University Press) or Trust the Text (2004, Routledge), for simplicity and
consistency of reference.
