The International Corpus of English (ICE) began in 1990 with the primary aim of providing material for comparative studies of varieties of English throughout the world. Twenty centres around the world are preparing corpora of their own national or regional variety of English.

OK, the title of the thread has been edited. The forum at its earliest stage was as fine-grained as you see today. It would be unsprprising that ICE is under Native Corpora.

ICE sounds good, but the pity is , unlike BNC, it is not publically available. I hope that one day corpus4uers can use it via internet.

The ICE component corpora (with the exception of the ICE-GB) ARE FREEly downloadable (but a license must be signed and faxed back in order to get a password to unzip archives).

could you please provide a URL where we can see how to download ICE and see the exact form that needs to be filled out? thanks a lot, Dr. Xiao!

Both downloads and license agreement are available at:

Downloads are free, but you need to sign a license agreement to get passwords.

thanks a lot, dr.xiao! I will have a try! yes! I got them all! it is a pity that there is no subcorpus for Chinese English, though China will probably become the largest group of EF learners in the years to come!

The Hong Kong component is under construction. I think ICE will only include components of English as a native or second language, but not as a foreign language.

are there any specific resaons for this kind of plan? Probably in my opinion, probably the EFL corpus is significantly meaningful to the teachers like us as well as the English comiplers either at home or abroad, since the number of EFL leaners surpasses that of ESL around the world. The compilation of EFL-tageted dictionaries is a lucrative market for those native speaking professors. In the process EFL leaner corpus has a lot of say in the drafting of language tips for them. I remeber that some prominent English dictionary has started to do that, if my memory doesn't fail me. The EFL leaner corpus has a lot of say in the design of language testing items as well. Therefore probably we Chinese need to initiate a new project of learner corpus to cover all the other EFL corpora left over by ICE.

The International Corpus of Learner English (ICLE) is perhaps a complement to the ICE...
