According to the appraisal system(one branch of lingusitics), the affect s(emotion) of yi and ceng are different. yi seems to hold the feeling of alreadiness and not so explict desire of going again. But Ceng senses to take the feeling that the action of going there happened some time ago and seems to express the desire to go again.

when we use "已(or已经)"we are more intended to indentify our past activity than when we use "曾(or 曾经)",曾 carries some flavor of experience clarrification. so we are more likely to use 已经 to state the fact that we have done this something, and we'd rather not do it again if possible, when we use 曾经,we just say that we have such an experience, which some else may not have
