SPECIAL ISSUE OF ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES
TITLE: ESP Research in Asia
GUEST EDITORS: An CHENG and Laurence ANTHONY

As in many other parts of the world, English is rapidly spreading across Asia. One scholar estimates that the number of English users and learners in China has reached a staggering 330 million in the 21st century. The status of English in Asian societies is also changing, with some businesses in Japan, for example, requiring all their meetings, telephone calls, and e-mail communication to be carried out solely in English.

These trends and changes raise serious questions about the impact of English as a ‘lingua franca’ in professional and academic communication in Asia and draw our research attention to the educational, economic, and social factors that propel the popularity of ESP. The aim of this special issue is to present original ESP research being carried out in Asia that addresses these and other ESP-related questions that fall within the scope of the journal.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

A 600-word abstract should be submitted that represents work previously unpublished in English or in any other language. On a separate sheet, include each author’s name, affiliation, mailing address, e-mail address, telephone and fax numbers, and a 50-word biographical statement.

The deadline for abstracts is June 30, 2011.

Decisions will be made on the basis of these abstracts to invite authors to submit a full paper for possible inclusion in the special issue. Full papers will be due on 29 February, 2012 and will follow the normal peer-review process for the journal.

Abstracts should be submitted to both guest editors:

冒昧的问个比较低级的问题,这样的特刊收录的文章,评职称的时候算数么?

估计和国内的特刊搞混了,被它们吓怕了。据我了解,国际期刊的特刊通常都是围绕某一专题而特编的,审稿过程和刊物质量并不会因此有松动,在国外的职称评定上是不受质疑的。国内怎么认定还不太了解。这年头凡事到了中国都会走样……

as far as i know, some universities(esp. not key university) rank all english journals in one category--国外期刊, which is very funny

The ESP Journal Special Issue is only special in that all papers are on the same theme: ESP in Asia. However, the review process is the same as normal (in fact a little more difficult). All submissions will be first reviewed by the editors and then selected papers will be blind reviewed by experts in the field. In short, the quality will be very high, which means it will be very good for your resume to have a paper accepted.

Laurence.

Thanks for providing the information. Unfortunately,i am teaching in an unenlightened college where everything would be changed to local style.

我是做生物学、医学与药学SCI论文翻译的。很多新刊会通过call for paper的形式刊登一下稿件,进而获取影响因子。这个也看期刊约到内容的水平。
